From Tuesday 1 November 2022, VAT-registered businesses must sign up to Making Tax Digital (MTD) and use MTD-compatible software to keep their VAT records and file their quarterly or monthly VAT returns, or face a penalty. The existing VAT online account option can no longer be used for these returns from this date.

Businesses that file annual VAT returns will still be able to use their VAT online account until 15‌‌‌‌‌‌ ‌‌May 2023.

Here are the steps HMRC provide for you to take, if you haven’t signed up to MTD and started using compatible software already:

  1. Choose MTD-compatible software that’s right for you – here is a list of software on GOV.UK.
  2. Check the permissions in the software – once you’ve allowed it to work with MTD, you can file your return easily.
  3. Keep digital records of your current and future VAT returns. Here are the records you need to keep.
  4. Sign up for MTD and file your future VAT returns using your new software. To find out how to do this, go to GOV.UK and search ‘record VAT’.

All VAT returns completed by Clear Vision on behalf of our clients are already submitted via MTD-compatible software.
