Personal Information on the Companies House Register
Many of our company clients want to know what personal details are recorded by Companies House. Companies House is the UK’s official registry of limited companies. In exchange for the protection of limited liability, companies must operate with openness and transparency. When you set up (or ‘incorporate’) a company, you are required to provide certain information about the business. Companies House checks this information, records it on the official register and makes it publicly available.
By law, your company must submit details about its activities, annual accounts and the individuals who control it. You must also provide information about company directors and keep this data up to date, for as long as the company exists. All of this information is held in the Companies House Register, which is searchable online free of charge and accessible worldwide.
What Information is Made Public?
Anyone who becomes a company director, officer or Person with Significant Control (PSC) should understand that some of their details will appear on the public record.
Addresses
The following addresses may appear on the public register:
- Registered Office Address – this is the company’s official address and must be located in the same part of the UK where the company is registered (e.g. England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland)
- Single Alternative Inspection Location (SAIL) – an optional address where company records can be made available for inspection
- Service Address – a correspondence address for company officers. This can be the same as the registered office or another location
Although directors must provide their residential address to Companies House, this is not shown on the public register. To protect your privacy, do not use your home address as your company’s registered office, SAIL or service address, unless you are comfortable with it being public.
Directors
If you are appointed as a company director, the following information will be available on the public register:
- Full name
- Nationality
- Occupation
- Month and year of your date of birth
Company Secretaries
Company secretaries are not required to provide a home address or date of birth. However, they must give a service address for public correspondence, which will be made publicly available.
People with Significant Control (PSCs)
A PSC is someone who owns or controls a company. PSCs must provide the same personal information as directors, plus information about how they control the company (e.g. shareholding or voting rights).
Publicly available PSC information includes:
- Full name
- Nationality
- Occupation
- Month and year of your date of birth
- Nature of control over the company
How the Public can Access the Information
The Companies House register is open to everyone. Anyone can search the register online and some information is also visible through search engines such as Google.
How Long the Information is Kept
Information about a company and its officers remains on the public register for the lifetime of the company, even if individuals resigned. This also applies to dormant companies.
When a company is dissolved, the information remains on the public register for 20 years after dissolution. This includes details of all directors, secretaries and PSCs who served during the company’s existence.

Thank you to those who have already provided their information and documents. If you haven’t yet sent us your completed tax return checklist, please do so as soon as possible. Timely receipt of all documents ensures we can prepare and file your return accurately and on time, avoiding last-minute issues.
If you have questions or need help with your checklist, our tax team is ready to assist and make the process as smooth as possible.
